This home routine came from working with my own kids. Twenty five times a day you will hear us expounding the benefits of flossing. You’ll also hear us recommending that parents be involved in the brushing because kid’s hand skills, on average, are not up to the job until about age 9. Finally, after hearing myself repeat how much more important flossing is, and dealing with the time necessary to brush three kids at home, the light went on!! Flossing is the key ingredient!
When the kids were about 6 years old I gave them full responsibility for brushing. After brushing they were to bring me an 18 inch (or so) piece of floss. They usually found me in the kitchen cleaning up the meal and dishes. They handed me the floss, turned around and tipped their head back against my stomach with mouth open. I could floss the molars in about 15 seconds flat!
- Only 15 seconds of my time.
- The critically important part of tooth cleaning gets done every day.
- If the brushing is less than appropriate, I see it, every time.... Uh Oh, go back and brush again!!!
