Scott Thompson started his dental education at the University of California in San Francisco Dental School where he graduated in 1970. He then spent two years practicing general dentistry in the U. S. Air Force in the Philippine Islands. While there he decided to pursue children’s dentistry and after the Air Force returned to UCSF Dental School to study, graduating from the Pediatric Program in 1974.
The San Francisco Bay Area was home, so he took over a Pediatric Dental Practice in Marin County, north of San Francisco, in 1974 where he practiced for twenty nine years. This highly educated upper middle class community helped Dr. Thompson learn how integral an education is with good dental and general health. The patients and families in this practice responded well to health promoting information and experienced a very low dental disease rate.
Then Dr. Thompson relocated to a rural setting in the foothills of California where, in a new small practice, he discovered an entirely different attitude and experience with dental and general health. The dental disease experience was much higher, especially in the children. Simultaneously he began working in a large children’s practice in a low income area of Sacramento where the poor oral health is astounding. There he sees the impact on health that low income and minimal education brings. He divides his time between the office and the hospital operating room treating children under general anesthesia.
His passion has become helping high risk families prevent the dental disease that can disable their children. He is currently active with his local California foothills community, the Sacramento area dental community, and the American Academy of Pediatrics promoting dental disease prevention education and early intervention for high risk populations.
Dr. Thompson lives in the California foothills with his two high school age boys. In his free time he loves to get into the out of doors he learned to love growing up in Montana. Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, kayaking and bicycling are some of the activities he enjoys most. He also enjoys theater, music and good food in the company of good friends.
